  Rantau Panjang Community Garden

The Rantau Panjang Community Garden was established under the W.A.T.E.R. Project with the support of SPARK Foundation to promote community participation in sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and livelihood development. Managed by the local community, the garden serves as a demonstration site for sustainable gardening practices while encouraging food security, environmental awareness, and community engagement.

To expand its agricultural activities, the community has extended the garden by five additional plots, each measuring approximately 0.5 acre, bringing the total cultivated area to 3.5 acres. The expansion includes two plots of bitter gourd (peria), one plot of sponge gourd (petola), and two plots of yardlong beans (kacang panjang). The garden has achieved an estimated harvest of around 500 kg of yardlong beans and approximately 100 kg each of bitter gourd and sponge gourd. In addition to these crops, the garden cultivates a wide variety of vegetables, roselle, calamansi (limau kasturi), and traditional herbal plants.

Beyond fresh produce, the community has also developed value-added products to generate additional income and promote sustainable use of local resources. These include roselle pickles, lemon pickles, and handcrafted incense sticks produced using herbs grown in the garden. These initiatives contribute to strengthening community livelihoods while demonstrating how community gardens can support environmental sustainability, local entrepreneurship, and long-term community resilience.
