  Local Community

The majority of the local community approached were aware of their localised issues related to both solid waste and river water pollution. However a further information need to be addressed adequately so that the local community have the ability to understand how their level of awareness should be and their limitation on how it can be addressed among their local community members. For this the following action is most applicable to be undertaken:

  • The targeted local community will be provided with current and up-to date information in user friendly manner or by using laymen terms.

  • RA’s/KRT’s or relevant NGO’s/CBO’s indirectly involve with day to day programme with the local community in the targeted area.

  • Increase level of awareness and sense of ownership/belongings can be developed within the targeted local community. (For example; competition, special award and recognition usually can be a motivation for individual to be more aware and encourage participation)

It is important for the targeted communities to have adequate knowledge and skills to take action to tackle their issues. In this context the strategy to improve capacity building is to ensure that their knowledge and skill to be developed under this programme are in line with the issues and problem facing by the community in the zone. Therefore programme with the right skills to produce an effective localise action plan at their local level which could help them find best solution for their current problem.

Two core programme proposed are:

  1. SMART Ranger training programme
Specifically to train interest group on solid waste management related issues with an alternative sub-initiatives localise programme training (i.e recycling, composting and used cooking oil collection, etc)

  2. RIVER Ranger training programme
Specific training for interest group on river basin management issues particularly river monitoring, river watch/auditing and mapping as well as water auditing and river health check. There is no initiative for RIVER Ranger programme but committed local community can consider adopting certain stretch of the river section for their monitoring activities purposes.

Socio economic monitoring committee

Focus on the community who has developed their workable alternative income programme -  community to manage the whole programme at local level. Smart partnership programme with stakeholders (especially government agencies and private sectors whom need to support the local community activities such as buying recycle, used cooking oil and compost etc. as well as Marketing tools for product made from used cooking oil, nature craft or from recyclable materials will be emphasised.

Kinta River Education Programme

The first approach for local community activity started from Sg. Buntong area. The first KRT meeting was conducted on 2nd July 2013 with KRTs around the area to explain about the objective of the Kinta River Education Programme and the role of the local communities in taking care of the Buntong River. Around 8 KRTs from the area were involved in the RIVER Ranger Activity and SMART Ranger Activity under the Kinta River Education Programme.

8 KRT are:
